The Laguna heroes made a history in the world of chess on Saturday night after being hailed as the first-ever champions of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP).
In a game that was held on Black Saturday, the Laguna Heroes led by the Grand Master (GM) of Board 1 player Banjo Barcenilla who is a Two-time Asian Junior champion, with his team and Fibe Master (FM) Austin Jacob Literatus won the championship game against Camarines
Soaring Eagles in the National finals which made them earn their spot as the champions in the All-Filipino Conference title of the PCAP.
“Our championship match against the Camarines Soaring Eagles was the toughest and most
intense among the matches that we had, especially when we reached the do-or-die armageddon match.” Said Head Coach Arena Grandmaster Dr. Alfredo “Fred” Paez.
Head Coach Paez also extended the group’s appreciation towards the fans, followers, and the supporters of the Laguna Heroes.
As indicated by 1996 Philippine Junior Hero Fide Expert Robert Suelo who watched the game live through online chess.com, Asuela was ahead of the nature of pieces caught and time as he looks ready to penetrate through Literatus' Advanced Guard.
Yet, a pawn check at f3 in his 37th move began Asuela's endgame defeat, as he went max speed on his time assault against Literatus.
Literatus’ last move ended the contest and handing the Heroes the championship.
Up next for PCAP is its supported gathering, which will be known as the Wesley So Cup to pay tribute to the Filipino-American super GM who even aided in the improvement of the world's first expert chess class.
