As we all know, a sprained ankle is not an uncommon thing in the field of sports. Most players suffer from this type of injury before, during, and after games. A player can suffer from this injury just by merely walking or while being too absorbed in a game. Suffering from a sprained ankle can have risks of long-term complications if left untreated.
Here are some ways on how you can treat a sprained ankle and not make it worse:

Protect. Make sure that your ankle is stabilized and in a position free from hazards.
Rest. Sit or lie down in order to keep your weight off of your injury.
Ice. Put ice on your sprained ankle—for the first two days, you can apply it for 20 to 30 minutes every 2 to 3 hours.
Compress. Wrap your sprained ankle with a tight compression bandage or an elastic brace.
Elevate. Rest your ankle higher than your hips when lying down.
The PRICE method is important to remember when treating sprained ankle because it prevents the injury from deteriorating—however, these are just cautionary steps. Consulting your doctor for evaluation afterward is still recommended in order to receive a prescription and a treatment plan for your injury.
