With the upcoming 2022 presidential elections, Filipinos are surely fascinated with who are the people up to take the challenge of running for the highest position in the country given that the Philippines is now facing a lot of conflicts.
A hot news circulating the radar of the public and media lately is the possible presidential candidacy of the National Boxing Champ and Senator, Manny Pacquiao. I believe he is a work in progress and his effort is visible to the public eye and appreciated given that he came from the field of sports to politics quickly however he is still raw for the position.
People might say “but he came from the grassroots level of the society, he’ll surely know how to help the poor”. Being a commanding in chief does not solely focus on helping the poor rather he will lead the country in almost all aspects. Being a president is not purely about being generous and charitable to people.
Another fact is that Manny Pacquiao is an avid christian. He will be having a hard time putting into heart the 1987 constitution article II, section 6 that says “The separation of Church and State shall be inviolable.” Not to mention the homophobic statements he made in the past that was truly despised by the members of the LGBTQ community in the country.
Senator Manny Pacquiao is also the top absentee in the senate. Considering this, how can we give him the highest position when he can’t even fulfill his duties as a senator properly.
With the approaching election, we Filipinos should be rational and think critically about this important matter. We should set reasonable standards with whom we will entrust the future of our country as well as our own. We should keep in mind to elect someone who’s capable, not someone who’s wealthy and famous.
