Oceana, the largest international ocean conservation organization that aims to preserve and restore the oceans around the world asked the Depart of Natural Resources (DENR) to command the contractor to stop dumping new coats of dolomites in Manila Bay.
Gloria Estenzo-Ramos, an environmental lawyer and the vice president of Oceana Philippines described the dumping of more crushed dolomite to rehabilitate Manila Bay as a waste of people's money.
Ramos said that the government should have spent its funds on more important matters such as COVID-19 vaccines as many Filipinos are still left unvaccinated and the project is against the public emergency.
As reported by Oceana, the dolomite that was dumped from September to December 2020 had already eroded.
University of the Philippines Marine Science had mentioned in September 2020 that the sand will only erode considering the fluid mechanic of the bay.
Ramos added that dumping dolomite will not aid the bay's environmental problem. Instead, she proposed some solutions to the matter such as installing water treatment facilities, reducing plastic pollution, and banning mangrove-cutting.
