Education is not a competition

DAUNTLESS

Beatriz Bernales

Striving for excellence is a progress in order to achieve our passion rather than striving for perfection. Since education is such an important part of achieving our goals in life, students, particularly in today's age, characterized education as a competition— which is also why most students are finding it difficult when they can't afford to enroll in today's pandemic as they fear of being left behind.

According to DepEd Undersecretary Jesus Mateo, the clarification comes after the results of a survey released on Feb. 24, 2021, by the Social Weather Stations (SWS) which found that 13% or an estimated 4.4 million school-aged Filipinos are currently not enrolled.

This is happening now to the majority of students and to those who can't afford to enroll due to the difficulty in this time of crisis— it has increased students' fear of being left behind.

Choi Woo-seung said from the drama The Best Hit, "At some point, our goals have turned from passing the exam to escaping from this place. We are not studying to become something. We study because we are scared we end up being nothing. We don't study to gain something. We study because we don't want to lose anything."

At this point, others are not solely afraid of being left behind and not being able to finish right away— it's also because of the system since there is this stigma that you'll have no direction in life if you don't finish school.

On top of that, there is still such a system, with students defining education as a competition. Students just see education as a race, a way to graduate, and just to get high grades rather than a way as an effort to succeed and pursue their dreams.

Education can help you excel and grades do matter but don't let grades define how hard you work to achieve your goals.
