May 1, 2021- The New York Police Department Hate Crimes Dashboard has recorded 42 cases of hate crimes against Asians in the first four months of 2021 with 17 arrests.

This number is greater than what was reported in the entire year of 2020 with 28 cases and 23 arrests.
The NYPD Task Force confirmed four attacks on Asian Americans in New York City on the first weekend of May, including one with a hammer.
A 52-year-old woman was pushed while waiting for a subway train in Brooklyn on Saturday, according to an NYPD spokesperson. The alleged offender, a woman, fled leaving the victim with minor injuries.
The investigation is being led by the Hate Crimes Task Force and no arrests have been made in connection with the attack.
On the same day, three people known to make snide comments about Asians attacked a 15-year-old boy in the Queens borough.
The teen was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the spokesperson.
On Sunday, two Asian women, ages 29 and 31, were approached from behind in Manhattan by an individual who demanded them to remove their face masks according to the NYPD.
The attacker swung a hammer at the woman who tried to fight back before walking away. The 31-year-old woman was wounded in the head and later on, was taken to a hospital.
The department is calling for the public's cooperation in locating the attacker, whose photos and video were posted on the department's Twitter account.
That same day, behind the Queens Plaza subway station, a man came up and punched a 22-year-old Asian man in the back and chest before leaving.
According to the NYPD Hate Crimes Dashboard, 42 cases of hate crimes against Asians were recorded in the first four months of 2021 with 17 arrests; and 28 cases reported in the entire year of 2020, with 23 arrests.
During a rally, NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio demanded an end to Asian violence.
"So anyone who commits a hate crime, let's be blunt, let's be clear. We will find you, we will prosecute you. You will suffer the consequences. If you harm our Asian brothers and sisters, you will pay. Period!" de Blasio said.
